about

Christin asked me to compose this piece for her as a collection of souvenirs from our experience at CalArts.  As a supportive collaborator and skilled musician, I have enjoyed several performances with Christin.  She has played many of my pieces here at Calarts and I was glad to compose a piece specifically for us to play on the last recitals of our academic careers.  Calartian Souvenirs is a collection of sounds that have been shaped by my time here in Valencia.  Structurally, this music is like a box with many objects, each attached to a memory or experience.  Some are smooth and shiny, while others are rough and sharp.  Each section emerges as a distorted mutation of it’s predecessor while simultaneously functioning as a bridge to the next section.  It is as if crossing a bridge only to realize that you have arrived on another bridge, or sorting through a box of souvenirs, only to uncover more memories, abandoned ideas, and paths to remote memories lodged within the folds of your mind.
