about

The contrabass clarinet is a very odd instrument. When creating music for such a thing, it is almost impossible for me to write conventionally. This clarinet with its severe congenital abnormality plays the musician instead of the reverse. I composed this piece to watch Alex’s contrabass play him. This unwieldy noise machine has so much potential not only musically, but theatrically as well. How can this theatricality be ignored? I worked hard to fuse Alex’s excellent musicianship with a sense of child-like curiosity that could occur as a toddler stumbles upon such an instrument in a playground.

This is my second piece commissioned by Alex for his contrabass clarinet and I hope that I have once again managed to capture the strangeness and mystique surrounding both Alex and his enormous instrument.
